June/July
2001
I have been having a great time this summer, training
like there is no tomorrow! Well, actually there is
a tomorrow. It is called the Spring season, beginning
with the Ironman and that is definitely what I am
training for!
Just got back from a guest
posing in Ft. Worth, Texas at the Southwest USA, a
very well-done show, I might add, by Ed
and IFBB Pro Betty Pariso.
They had a tremendous number of booths - it was an
actual fitness expo, similar to the Olympia, etc.
Great job, Ed and Betty! Anyway, I unvieled my newest
routine. For those that know me, I'm not into the
latest hip hop move, or rap song. Rather, I enjoy
displaying my physique in a way that both matches
my body and my personality, i.e. I choose very flowing,
moving and emotional pieces, often coupled with some
good old fashion, stage pumping metal or rock n' roll!
I am a child of the 80's and nothing gets me going
more in the gym or on stage than the likes of Guns
'n Roses, Metallica, AC/DC. etc.! But, there is another
part of my personality that those close to me know
and that I want to now share with my fans when I am
on stage....I am a complete clown. Hands down, I am
a straight up CLOWN,
who loves to do impressions (ask me to do Bill Clinton
sometime). So, true to that part of my personality,
I've taken it to the stage:
Imagine, me, at @240lbs on
stage, dressed in a bright yellow old-style gangster
zoot suit, a la Jim Carey from the movie, The Mask.
Add to it the yellow gangster fedora he wears, a GREEN
face and oversized teeth, and you have my latest routine!
Somehow, I managed to paint 7 layers of green latex
on my face, such that half-way through my routine
and my Jim Carey impressions from the movie, I was
able to rip off my costume and peel off a Green face,
to reveal a HARD 240lbs to rock the house with AC/DC!
I think I shocked the audience. I will post some photos
in the Gallery soon. Got great feedback and can't
wait to share this routine at my next appearances,
to include the Los
Angeles Bodybuilding Championships, July 21
and in
San
Jose, August 25.
So, next time you see me, you might want see if you
can make the clown in me come out!
March/April
2001
I am back from one heck of a spring tour!! What an
absolutely GRUELING but rewarding experience it was
to prepare and compete in not one, but five pro shows
in a row. There were only a few guys who dared to
take their bodies through this experience of traveling
and dieting and peaking for five shows and I can confidently
say that I held my condition from show one in Los
Angeles to the last one in Melbourne, Australia, better
than anyone else. I have the discipline to stay on
my diet no matter what life throws me. Check out my
quarter turn here to the right from the Arnold Stage!
February
2001
Well, 2001 has started off great for me. I've got
an exciting schedule of appearances and competions
this year and I am in my best condition ever and expect
to hit the stage that way!
Yes, you may have read it elsewhere,
I am planning on doing all of the IFBB Pro shows this
year. I've been described as the hardest working bodybuilder
in the business and with that I will not argue. My
schedule is quite a grueling one. So, just in case
you ever feel like giving yourself an excuse that
you are too busy to get in shape, because you have
a "real job" or a family or other commitments, I want
you to think about Garrett Downing and his schedule
which looks something like this:
4:15 am-Wake-up and groggily check
out physique (always nice and dry in the morning)
4:20 am-consume strong coffee that was set on automatic
brew from night before, down some thermogenics and
enjoy a tablespoon of natural peanut butter
4:30 am - begin packaging meals for later in the day
5:00 am - arrive @ gym. Train bodypart(s) for one
hour and do 45 minutes high intensity cardio, stretch
and do some abs or calves
7:10 am - arrive home. Put oatmeal in microwave that
cooks while I shower and dress for work
7:30 am- prepare rest of Meal #1 - breakfast.
7:45 am - read and respond to emails while eating
my breakfast
8:10 am - leave for my office
WORK ALL DAY and eat meals #2,#3,#4,#5 (YES, that's
right, work in a real job in an office while maintaining
the training and dieting schedule of a pro bodybuilder!!)
6:00 pm- leave for home, pick up any needed groceries
on the way
6:45 pm - arrive home, read and respond to fan and
business mail, start chicken on grill
7:00 pm - eat meal # 6
7:30 pm - practice posing
8:15 pm - unwind by catching news TV with fiancee
9:00 pm - eat meal # 7
9:30 pm - take supplements and crash in bed!
I
am proud and honored to say that I've been invited
to compete in the Ironman, the San Francisco Grand
Prix, the prestigious Arnold Classic and the Australian
Grand Prix. I will also be spending some additional
time making appearances in Australia following the
show, thanks to Tony Doherty, the promoter (and wife
of Australian Fitness Pro, Amanda Doherty). I am looking
forward to this and hope to meet many of the Australian
fans who have contacted me over the years!
At five weeks out from the IFBB
Pro Ironman I am leaner than I ever am at this stage.
I know this comes from my totally consistent approach
in the off-season. I am 4.5% bodyfat in the low 230
lb range.
I am excited about stepping on stage
and I promise to be in TOP condition, ready to go
up against the best of the IFBB!
Be sure to get your tickets to these
shows. Check my
appearances page for all the details about attending.
SEE YOU ON STAGE!!
